Chapter 12 / Alan Rambam

Alan Rambam: Pro-Social Work, Civic Impact & Ethical AI

Alan Rambam’s pro-social work started after Alan’s Mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Alan’s work quickly took him to the Clinton White House, where as the National Campaign Director of the White House National Campaign Against Youth Violence.

And founded the anti-discrimination non-profit SHiNE in memory of his Mom and following his work at the White House he founded the Muhammad Ali Scholarship Fund, and his work continues through to today where is on an Advisory Board Member at Latimer AI. His current civic focus is algorithmic inclusion and ethical AI.

Why Is Civic Engagement Central to Alan Rambam’s Work?

Civic engagement is central to my work because my family taught me, from a young age, that professional success is meaningless unless it is paired with active civic engagement and support for others. Raised in a union family, I learned firsthand that making a real difference requires active participation, whether handing out leaflets at election polls at age five or standing up for workers’ rights and public education.

That commitment deepened after losing my mother in a hit-and-run accident while she was on strike leading union negotiations for her school district. Across three decades, my pro-social work has spanned presidential appointments, national youth movements, civil rights scholarship funds, and modern ethical AI initiatives.

Today, as artificial intelligence rewrites how society consumes information, my civic focus centers on Algorithmic Inclusion & Ethical AI. Just as early internet platforms struggled with representation and bias, AI engines risk repeating those exact mistakes. My goal remains unchanged: ensuring that technology, media, and public policy reflect, empower, and protect historically underrepresented communities.

What Is Alan Rambam’s Role at Latimer AI and in Ethical AI?

I serve as an Advisory Board Member and Strategist at Latimer.ai, a culturally fluent AI platform, and ethical AI and inclusion are my current civic focus. AI models reflect the data used to train them. If training data lacks cultural nuance or historical accuracy, AI systems perpetuate systemic bias and erase underrepresented communities across the digital landscape.

Latimer’s architecture runs in three steps: foundation LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) → curated archives and an inclusive RAG pipeline → a culturally fluent LLM with accurate representation.

  • The Mission: Co-founded by my long-time colleague and good friend John Pasmore, Latimer AI is a culturally fluent artificial intelligence platform engineered to reduce bias in large language models and accurately represent Black, Brown, and underrepresented history and culture.
  • RAG & Inclusive Data Sourcing: Latimer sits atop major foundational models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Mistral) and layers a curated Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) database featuring licensed historical archives, public domain records, academic dissertations, and historic publications (such as The New York Amsterdam News).
  • Nuanced Language Governance: The model updates insensitive or outdated historical phrasing, for example programmatically enforcing terms like “formerly enslaved people” rather than legacy labels.
  • Institutional Adoption & Workshops: Latimer partners with top higher education institutions, HBCUs (Howard Law, Morehouse College, Morgan State University), and enterprise writing tools (Grammarly) to deliver inclusive learning. I recently led an AI readiness workshop at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

What Did Alan Rambam Lead at the White House National Campaign Against Youth Violence and SHiNE?

I served as National Campaign Director of the White House National Campaign Against Youth Violence (NCAYV) and founded the anti-discrimination non-profit SHiNE.
